Thilakan, the patriarch of Malayalam cinema, passed away around 3.35 a.m today (Sep 24) after battling with multiple organ failure at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
He was 77 and had been ailing for some time.
Thilakan started his career as a stage actor in PJ Antony’s troupe. Later he graduated to movies during the golden era of Malayalam cinema in the 70′s and 80′s, and went on to do 200 films.
He entered films with K G George’s Mammootty-starrer Ulkadal. Incidentally, his last release was Ustad Hotel with Mammootty’s son Dulquer Salmaan, which was a blockbuster.
Thilakan won the National Award for Best Actor in a supporting role in 1988. In 1994 and 1998, he won State awards for Santhanagopalam and Perumthachan. and was honoured with the Padmashri in 2009.
Thilakan’s best performances have been in powerful character roles in films like Yavanika, Kireedam, Sphadikam, Moonnam Pakkam, Namukku Parkkan Munthiri Thoppukal, Kilukkam and recently in Indian Rupee.
Thilkan’s body would be kept for public viewing at the Victoria Jubilee Memorial Town Hall in the state capital from 11 a.m. and cremated at the electric crematorium around 4 p.m.
